Bring a "just right" silent reading book to class every day. Also bring your Reader's and Writer's Notebooks and an appropriate writing utensil to class every day.
1. Due today: Introductory Paragraph, Book Club Selection Sheet with parent signature.
2. In class: Literary Essay Unit - Conclusion Paragraph. Dissect mentor texts' Conclusions to see what components they have: Restated Claim, Summary of Evidence, Significance of the Theme for YOU PERSONALLY and the REAL WORLD. Read Ms. Leach's example for Poppy. Highlight each "section" of this paragraph to make sure it contains all three of the required parts. Apply this practice to your own Literary Essay by writing a rough draft of your Conclusion Paragraph in the rough draft packet following the guidelines we discussed (finish this for homework).
Continue working on new grammar lessons/practice (not homework).

2. In class: Literary Essay Unit - Introductory Paragraph. Dissect mentor texts' intros to see what components they have: Related "real-world" information, brief summary, and claim. Read Ms. Leach's example from Poppy. Highlight each "section" of this paragraph to make sure it contains all three of the required parts. Discuss why the summary is so brief and why it only focuses on specific portions of the story. Apply this practice to your own Literary Essay by writing a rough draft of your Introductory Paragraph in the rough draft packet following the guidelines we discussed (finish this for homework).

Special Announcement Regarding Birbery!

6th Graders:

The first Birbery bookclub will be held this coming Monday, February 2, during your recess period in the Media Center. Early that morning, the Newbery Award winner and honor books for 2015 will be announced. We will watch the recorded webcast of the announcement and learn what’s been chosen, then discuss! Remember – you need to attend at least two bookclubs to qualify for a chance to be on the committee. Hope to see you there!

1. Due today: 3 Body Paragraphs with Evidence and Elaboration
2. In class: Literary Essay Unit - Reasoning. Partner Revision work on three paragraphs with Evidence and Elaboration that were due today. Follow Ms. Leach's steps to work together to edit/change these paragraphs as needed. Mini-lesson and Discussion on Reasoning. Use the mentor literary essay examples to see how authors include Reasoning to connect their evidence back to their claim. Begin working on the Reasoning sentences to add to the end of each of your body paragraphs.
3. Homework:
-DUE MONDAY, 1/26/15: 3 Body Completed Paragraphs with Reasoning added at the end of each - This should all be done on in the "Literary Essay Rough Draft Packet" you received today. Don't forget to copy down the Evidence and Elaboration you already wrote and revised as well.

Be sure to include the general idea of the evidence as the first sentence for each paragraph, and then add a few sentences of elaboration to each piece of evidence (details from the story). This should all be done on the "Elaboration" page of your Writer's Notebook that we started today.

1. Due today: 3 Pieces of Evidence for Literary Essay
2. In class: Literary Essay Unit - Elaborating on Evidence. Partner work on three pieces of evidence that were due today. Work together to edit/change pieces of evidence as needed. Class discussion on what it means to elaborate. Use the mentor literary essay examples to see how authors elaborate on evidence by providing specific details from the story. Explain the difference between paraphrasing and quoting. Begin working on your body paragraphs - start with the general idea for each piece of evidence and then elaborate using details from the story.
3. Homework:
-DUE TOMORROW: Spelling #5
