We then wrapped up our discussions about the early settlement of Ancient Egypt, Kush, and Canaan, and moved on to Chapter 9. Here, we will be learning about daily life in Ancient Egypt. We began with a preview activity (ISN 65). We also read the introduction for Chapter 9 together, and had some time to begin working on our Key Content Terms.

Two winners will be selected from the Fitz/Brown 5th graders, and two winners will be selected from the Fitz/Brown 6th graders. These students will go on to compete in the school-wide spelling bee later this school year. The list of words to study is available from Ms. Leach. Students are not required to study for the Class Spelling Bees, but it is very much encouraged.

NOTE: The students also received their Personal Narrative rubric scores today in class. The next step for these Narratives is to prepare them to be published in our "Chicken Soup for the BCS Soul" anthology. This anthology will be a collection of all of the 5/6 Personal Narratives. It will be shared with the other 3rd-6th grade BCS students and teachers. We will also have a classroom copy available to read during Language Arts classes. In order to prepare your Narrative for publishing, you must follow the steps on the assignment sheet (1/2 page) that was passed out during class today. You can also find this assignment sheet on the Literacy Workshop Wiki, under "Chicken Soup for the BCS Soul."

1. The timeline of our nine ancient civilizations was due today. We checked this as a class and discussed some background information about each location.
2. We began working on Map Skills today. Over the next few days we will be discussing map components, scale, latitude, and longitude. Today we focused on basic map components and did an activity in which we analyzed and labeled a map of Ludington State Park. If this "Basic Map Components Activity" was not completed in class during the 20 minutes we spent on it, it is now homework DUE TOMORROW.

1. See, Think, Wonder was checked in today.
2. Students worked on putting the nine ancient civilizations in order from oldest to youngest today. They chose two pieces of evidence to indicate the relative age of the civilization. They then used those pieces of evidence to explain their reasoning for placing the civilization in that order of age. This activity is DUE TOMORROW.

3. NWEA testing was completed today. Students were given time to read and continue the 40 book challenge. Please note that there was an error on the initial handout. The minimum number of pages for a book is 150 for 5th graders and 200 for 6th graders.
4. No other homework.


Social Studies

1. Geoterms were collected today.

3. Students wrote a brief narrative today based on a time they felt a strong emotion. After writing, they shared with a peer and received feedback about how to improve their narrative.
4. Remember that tomorrow is NWEA testing, so report to room 501 right away and bring your silent reading book!

We will have team discussions as needed during the documentary.
